Is Wikipedia A Good News Source For Stories Like The Virginia Tech Shootings?

The popular Internet encyclopedia Wikipedia was a go-to site for news about the Virginia Tech shootings. I would like to point out some useful commentary available at Digg regarding the following story and the usefulness of Wikipedia as a source of reference for any kind of information, news or otherwise. After you read this article, check out this link for some different points of view: Wikipedia As A News Medium

Excerpt from The New York Times Article: The Latest on Virginia Tech, From Wikipedia
By NOAM COHEN
Published: April 23, 2007

IMAGINE a newspaper with more than 2,000 writers, researchers and copy editors, yet no supervisors or managers to speak of. No deadlines; no meetings to plan coverage; no decisions handed down through a chain of command; no getting up on a desk to lead a toast after a job well done.

and the article goes on to say...

Recently, Wikipedia had been the object of much controversy over the reliability of the its articles, and the frequent anonymity of its contributors. But during some recent critical events, like the Virginia Tech killings, the Southeast Asian tsunami in 2004, and the London bombings in 2005, the site has been transformed from an ever-growing reference book into a ever-updating news source — albeit one with scant original reporting.

Now I could posted this article in it's entirety, but if I wanted to do so without the chance of being victimized by corporate America for copyright violations, I would have to come up with $1,000 payable to The New York Times. Hmmm...I wonder just how much of that actually makes it to the writers pocket? This is certainly NOT the case with republishing developingWikipedia News or articles in blogs or otherwise. It's common ground, and any good writer should cite his references anyway and give credit or criticism where it is due.

I found your product on the shelf in the automotve section of Wal-Mart. I figured that I had nothing to lose but much to gain if your product worked. Well you made me a believer. I have a 1994 Aerostar Ford van that the headlights have turned yellow. I mean that I could drive with my head-lights on high beam at night and no one would no the differance. I used your Crystal View product and they look like they are brand new. My wife could not believe they were the same headlights! Thanks for this great product.

Thank You For Restoring My Faith in Corporate America!

God do I love getting these comments from all the REALLY satisfied customers of Crystal View's Headlight Restorer/Defogger.

This one just came in on Tuesday, May 1st from a lady over in Rhome, Texas. She had a common problem that many people do where her headlights have been oxidized by the sun and become foggy looking. This can be dangerous when you drive at night. Here is what she wrote regarding the CV Headlight Restorer from Crystal View Chemicals.

Comments:
To whom it may concern. I recently purchased your product at a Walmart store. My headlights were very dim so much so that I was going to buy some more at a price of 175 dollars a piece. Well to make a long story short I bought your product and it was a check book saver. The product not only worked but has exceeded my hightest expectations. I am going to tell everyone that has this problem about your product. Thank you for saving me and my family 280 dollars. Thank you for restoring my faith in Corp. AMERICA - Madison I.
